Flowers!

I have started to get some flowers coming off a few of my succulents and I am very excited about it!! Winter seems to be a great time for this and seeing as I am new to it all, the learning curve is steep! I have some photo's that I will add when I get them off my camera.

Welcome to my new Succulent and Cacti blog

I have decided to blog some of my experience with the growing of succulents and cacti in the northern suburbs of Sydney so that others may learn from my experience.
I have always had an interest in succulents and cacti due to the hardiness of the plants, and also the variety of shapes and sizes that they come in.
I got my first cacti when I was about 12, but it only lived a few years as I over watered it, and the roots got too wet and rotted away. This is probably the most common mistake made when caring for a cactus, and one I would not make again.
I gave up on them for some time, but during a trip down to Kiama in October 2008, I got hooked again after purchasing one succulent and one cactus from the weekend markets they had there for $5. They were both potted in 12cm diameter pots and where in very good health when I got them so I decided to keep them in their pots for a while and see how they go in a new environment, which was my office.
I kept them on my desk for a few weeks, but they didn't seem to like it as I was not near any windows, and the only light they got was from floor to ceiling windows about 5 metres away.
I moved them to a spot on the floor at the base of the windows, and then they really started to grow.
I saw new growth appearing within a few days, and they looked nice and green an healthy, so there they stayed for about 2 months, with the succulent growing very well and probably doubling in size. I then decided to re-pot them into some clay pots of about 18cm in diameter with good drainage, and there they sit today, very healthy and growing nicely.
